18th century wooden netsuke of a seated wolf with its paw on a carapace of a turtle. Extraordinary strong early carving with bold design and superb detailing: see the exaggerated narrowness of its snout and shoulder blades sticking out. Superb wear and patina, great hairwork, eyes are double inlaid making its face look alive. Himotoshi is formed by its tail on the bottom. Signed TOMOTADA in rectangular reserve on the bottom - I strongly believe the piece to be by the master himself. All that a great netsuke shall be. Length 2 3/16 inches.
